The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged to make education and healthcare the centrepiece of his proposed reforms.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Obi said that human capital development will be the foundation of his administration if elected, adding that he would unveil a broader roadmap for governance in the coming weeks.
The NDC presidential candidate also outlined plans to improve living standards, strengthen national unity, and curb abuse in government.
Obi said the proposed roadmap would be anchored on “unity, inclusion, social justice, equity, and the freedom of every citizen to pursue lawful dreams.”
He identified education and healthcare as the pillars of his development agenda, describing investment in people as essential to Nigeria’s long-term economic growth.
“Robust human capital is indispensable infrastructure for national progress. It serves as the fundamental capital upon which daily life, economic expansion, and the delivery of essential public services depend,” he said.
According to Obi, his administration would establish a task force immediately after assuming office to tackle Nigeria’s out-of-school children crisis while expanding Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to support industrialisation.
“From the outset of my presidency, we will establish a task force dedicated to drastically reducing the menace of out-of-school children. We will place greater emphasis on Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) to support our drive for massive industrialisation, anchored on our agricultural endowments and value addition across value chains organised around industrial parks to be located in development zones across the geopolitical regions of the country,” he said.
He added that his government would improve funding for TVET institutions through partnerships involving government, the private sector and faith-based organisations, saying the initiative would create apprenticeship opportunities similar to Germany’s dual education system.
He also pledged to strengthen character and civic education to promote trust, leadership and shared national values, arguing that these would form part of a broader governance framework aimed at driving national development.
