Betty Otimenyin Becomes Edo’s First Female Police Chief

Betty Otimenyin assumed office on Monday as the first female Commissioner of Police in Edo State.

Arriving at the Edo Police Command headquarters shortly before 10 am, Ms Otimenyin inspected a guard of honour and was welcomed by senior officers. She succeeds Umoru Ozigi, who retired on Saturday at the age of 60.

In an interview, Otimenyin, the 49th police commissioner deployed to Edo, pledged to tackle crime in the South-South state.

“I will work tirelessly until the crime rate reduces significantly,” she stated.

She also vowed to address extortion within the command, noting that the Inspector-General of Police condemns such practices.

Additionally, she emphasised a firm stance on violence against women and children.

Otimenyin, who joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent in 1992, previously served in various roles, including as Commissioner of Police and administration in the Force Intelligence Department.
