The Sudanese army announced on Saturday that it had successfully recaptured the cities of Al-Hasaheisa and Al-Rufaa in Al-Jazira State from the control of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as Hemedti, later admitted in an audio recording that his forces had lost control of Wad Madani, signalling that forces led by Abu Aqla Keikel had liberated the two cities.
The army reported in a statement that its forces, along with Sudan Shield Forces, had advanced on the Al-Hasaheisa and Al-Rufaa axes, dealing significant blows to the RSF militia. The military also confirmed they were pursuing the remnants of the RSF forces as they fled.
The recapture of Al-Hasaheisa, the second-largest city in Al-Jazira State, and Al-Rufaa, the largest city in the eastern region of the state, marked a significant gain for the Sudanese army.
Al-Hasaheisa is located approximately 55 kilometres (34 miles) from Wad Madani, the state capital.
The army’s successful offensive follows its re-entry into Wad Madani on January 11, nearly one year after the RSF had taken control of the city.
