Egypt Rejects Ethiopia’s Plans for More Nile Dams

Egypt has warned that it will not allow any party to control the flow of the Nile River to downstream countries, following remarks by Ethiopia’s water minister about building additional dams on the transboundary waterway.

An Egyptian official told the state-run MENA news agency on Sunday that Ethiopia’s reported plans to construct more dams on the Nile represented a continuation of what Cairo described as Addis Ababa’s unilateral approach and a violation of international law.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Ethiopian minister’s statements reflected “continued delusions that it can impose control over a shared international river and subject it to the will of a single country.”

Egypt “will not accept or allow any party to control water flows to downstream countries, Egypt and Sudan,” the source said.

The Egyptian official added that the state had “multiple and wide-ranging tools capable of defending the interests of the Egyptian people in the Nile,” without providing further details.
