Cristiano Ronaldo has said the current season will “probably” be his last as a professional footballer, with the 41-year-old Portuguese forward telling Vogue magazine that he wants to leave a “spectacular legacy.”
Ronaldo, who has scored more than 950 goals for club and country across a 25-year career, had previously indicated he would retire “soon” or within “one or two years.”
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” he told Vogue.
The former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus forward said his post-football plans were already mapped out.
“I have so many things to keep me busy that to tell you just one thing is hard,” he said, mentioning travel and padel among activities he planned to pursue.
“Because football could leave a big hole, you have to fill your time in various ways, not just one.”
Ronaldo said he wanted to “continue to enjoy what I’ve earned — what we’ve earned. Because after all it’s been 25 years with a lot of sacrifice.”
The interview came days after Ronaldo married his longtime partner Georgina Rodriguez in an intimate ceremony in Cascais, Portugal, on Tuesday.
He is due to rejoin his club Al Nassr for the new Saudi Pro League season after leading Portugal to the last 16 of the World Cup this summer.
