President Bola Tinubu has approved an extension of the retirement age for doctors and other healthcare professionals from 60 to 65 years.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigerian Medical Association, Dr. Mannir Bature, shared this information in a statement released Wednesday in Lagos.
Bature mentioned that the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammad Pate, has been instructed to officially present the approval to the Council on Establishment via the Office of the Head of Service for finalisation.
He noted that Pate communicated the policy change during a high-level meeting with NMA President Prof. Bala Audu and important health sector stakeholders.
According to Bature, the meeting also included leaders from the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives, and the Joint Health Sector Unions.
He stated that the discussions focused on the advancements made regarding the welfare of doctors and other healthcare workers in Nigeria.
As he reported, the coordinating minister confirmed that the pending payments related to the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure adjustments are about to be processed.
