Shakira: Peru Probes Medical Record Leak, Clinic Faces Possible Fines

Peruvian authorities have launched an investigation into how pop star Shakira’s medical records were leaked after her treatment at a Lima clinic, threatening severe sanctions and fines of up to $430,000.

Shakira, a 48-year-old Colombian singer-songwriter, and a four-time Grammy winner, was taken to the emergency room on Saturday due to an abdominal condition, forcing her to cancel a major concert scheduled for Sunday.

Shortly after her brief hospitalisation, confidential details of her medical report surfaced on social media, sparking outrage among fans and prompting an official inquiry.

A spokesperson for Peru’s national health service watchdog confirmed on Tuesday that an investigation was well underway.

“Yesterday (Monday), we were at the clinic. We met with the officials, and they explained what happened, which is confidential,” said spokesperson Ruby Cubas, adding that the probe is expected to last 25 days.

The Delgado Clinic, where Shakira received treatment, also announced its internal investigation into what it described as a “serious ethical breach” of patient confidentiality.

In a statement released Tuesday, February 18, 2025, the clinic said it had “already identified and started the sanctioning process against those proven responsible.”

Shakira, currently on her first world tour in seven years, performed in Lima on Monday night, expressing gratitude to her Peruvian fans.

“Eternal thanks to my beautiful Peruvian audience!! So much love and care you’ve given me!” she wrote.

The tour, titled Las Mujeres ya no lloran (Women Don’t Cry Anymore), began in Rio de Janeiro just days after Shakira won a Grammy for Best Latin Pop Album. With over 90 million records sold worldwide, she remains one of the most successful Latin artists in history.
