US Woman Sues After Carrying Wrong Baby in IVF Mix-up

An American woman is initiating legal action against an IVF clinic due to an incident where she unintentionally gave birth to a baby boy who was not genetically hers, which led her to relinquish custody.

Krystena Murray, a resident of Georgia, conceived through IVF treatment at the Coastal Fertility clinic in May 2023.

However, it became apparent that the embryo she had been carrying belonged to another couple after Ms Murray delivered a boy who was of a different ethnicity than both herself and the sperm donor she had selected.

Despite the situation, Ms Murray wished to keep the child and cared for him for several months until the biological parents were awarded custody.

Ms Murray, who is white, gave birth to a black baby in December 2023. She refrained from posting pictures of the child online or allowing family and friends to see him.

Eventually, she bought a DNA testing kit, and the results she received in late January 2024 confirmed that they were not biologically connected, according to the lawsuit filed against the clinic.

She notified the clinic about the mix-up the following month, which prompted them to alert the biological parents, who sought custody when the baby turned three months old.

Ms Murray voluntarily surrendered custody after being advised by her legal counsel that her chances of prevailing in family court were slim. The baby now resides with his biological parents under a different name in another state.

The lawsuit states that to this day, Ms Murray remains unaware if the Coastal Fertility Specialists mistakenly transferred her embryo to another couple or what occurred with it thereafter.
