Thousands of Deportivo Alaves supporters staged a protest against Israel during their LaLiga match at Mendizorroza Stadium on Sunday. In a coordinated demonstration, fans held up red cards and unfurled a large Palestinian flag, expressing solidarity with Palestine.
The protest, conducted from the stands, symbolically showed the red card to Israel, with fans raising their cards in unison while the Palestinian flag was prominently displayed.
This demonstration comes amid growing international condemnation of Israel’s actions in Gaza, with increased calls for accountability and an end to military operations.
A ceasefire agreement has been in place in Gaza since 19 January, temporarily halting the Israeli military campaign that caused widespread destruction in the enclave. However, Gaza authorities have reported ongoing ceasefire violations by the Israeli army, despite the truce.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) issued arrest warrants in November last year for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Additionally, Israel is facing a genocide case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) over its military actions in Gaza.
The protest at Mendizorroza Stadium reflects the growing global solidarity movement with Palestine, as calls for justice and an end to hostilities continue to intensify.
