The Speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Mr. Abbas Tajudeen, has underscored the importance of empowering women from childhood, stressing that their involvement is vital to the development of any nation. He called for their active participation in the leadership and execution of developmental projects and programs.
In his message commemorating the 2025 International Women’s Day, themed “Accelerate Action,” Speaker Abbas highlighted his ongoing efforts to protect the girl child and promote women’s inclusion in politics and governance in Nigeria. He stressed that women play critical roles in society and should be placed at the forefront of development initiatives.
“Today, I congratulate the female folk as the world celebrates International Women’s Day. Indeed, the theme – Accelerate Action – is apt. It is long overdue to walk the talk. We must all collectively agree that women are critical stakeholders in any community. They are building homes, nurturing children, and breaking political, academic, professional, and other socio-economic barriers,” said Abbas.

The Speaker also detailed some of his initiatives aimed at advancing women’s participation in governance, such as the proposal for special seats for women in the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly. These are part of several gender-related bills being considered by the House Committee on Constitution Review.
Abbas further noted that the House now has two dedicated committees for women: the Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development and the Committee on Women in Parliament. He expressed pride in the increasing number of women excelling in various roles, including within his own office.
The Speaker reaffirmed that under his leadership, the 10th House would continue to pursue initiatives focused on empowering and including women, contributing to a better Nigeria.
