Nigeria’s House of Representatives has directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to take steps to block all pornographic sites within the nation.
This decision was made on Tuesday following a motion by Rep Dalhatu Tafoki (APC, Katsina State). In his motion, Tafoki raised concerns about the harmful effects of cyber pornography both in Nigeria and globally.
While discussing the motion, Tafoki highlighted that cyber pornography is an escalating issue worldwide and pointed out that Nigeria has not adequately addressed this problem. He said that Nigeria is a “highly religious country” where principal religions advocate against nudity and obscenity.
The lawmaker also noted that multiple nations across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have implemented laws prohibiting pornography.
To underscore his argument, the Katsina representative referred to warnings from psychologists and sociologists regarding the adverse effects of pornography, adding that pornography can lead to infidelity, prostitution, and addiction.
Tajudeen Abbas, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, subjected the motion to a voice vote, where the representatives expressed their support for it.
The House instructed the NCC to enforce penalties on service providers that do not adhere to the directive.
