Georgia Court Extends Ex-President Saakashvili’s Jail Term to Nine Years

On Wednesday, a Georgia court sentenced Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president and pro-Western reformer, to nine years in prison for misusing public funds.

This sentence is three years longer than the one he is currently serving.

Speaking to AFP, Saakashvili’s attorney, Dito Sadzaglishvili, described the charges as “fabricated” and said the Tbilisi city court “sentenced Saakashvili to nine years in prison” in a case involving the misappropriation of nine million lari (roughly $3.2 million) in public funds.
