Nearly 400,000 Sudanese Return Home Despite Ongoing War, Says IOM

Nearly 400,000 displaced Sudanese have returned to their homes in the past two and a half months, according to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM).

Between December and March, around 396,737 people made their way back to areas that had been recaptured by the Sudanese army from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), following military advances in central Sudan.

The returnees primarily come from regions such as Sennar state and Al-Gezira state, which were regained by the army in late 2023 and early 2024.

Many also returned to the capital, Khartoum, where the army has made significant strides in expelling the RSF.

Despite the return, many families found their homes looted or destroyed after more than a year of displacement.

The ongoing war between the Sudanese army, led by Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, and the RSF, led by Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, has displaced millions.

An estimated 11.5 million people remain displaced within Sudan, with many facing dire food insecurity in what the United Nations has labelled the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Since the war’s start in April 2023, over 3.5 million people have fled the country, and the conflict has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths.
