Budget Dispute: Rivers Assembly Adjourns Indefinitely

The Rivers State House of Assembly has suspended its sessions indefinitely, further escalating the political tensions in the state regarding the presentation of the 2025 Appropriation Bill by Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

The decision to halt legislative activities was made during a plenary session on Friday, overseen by Speaker Martin Amaewhule in Port Harcourt.

This indefinite suspension follows closely on the heels of Governor Fubara formally notifying Speaker Amaewhule of his plan to appear before the House to present the 2025 budget for review and approval.

In a letter dated March 13, 2025, and addressed to the Speaker, Fubara expressed his desire to present the budget on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, or any other date the House might find suitable.

The governor explained his request by referring to compliance with a recent Supreme Court ruling and the lawmakers’ previous request for a new budget presentation.

Fubara also reflected on his earlier attempt to deliver the budget, which ended in controversy as he and his team were reportedly denied access to the Assembly complex.

He emphasised that the Supreme Court has stated all branches of government should operate within the boundaries set by the Constitution, encouraging the legislators to focus on governance rather than political disputes.
