Southampton football club revealed on Monday that it has dismissed manager Ivan Juric after its drop from the Premier League. Following a 3-1 loss at Tottenham on Sunday, Southampton found themselves relegated in record time.

Juric’s team, at the bottom of the table, suffered 25 defeats in 31 top-flight matches during a dismal season.

Relegating with seven games still to play gives Southampton, last year’s Championship play-off winners, an unwanted Premier League record, beating the previous records of Derby and Huddersfield, who were relegated with six matches remaining in 2008 and 2019, respectively.

Juric, who succeeded Russell Martin in December when Southampton was already in a precarious situation, secured only one league victory, against Ipswich in February. The Saints have recorded seven losses in their last eight league encounters.

“We can confirm that we have today reached an agreement with our men’s first-team manager, Ivan Juric, to end his spell at the club,” said a Southampton statement.

Simon Rusk will be the interim manager for the rest of the season, supported by Adam Lallana.

Danny Rohl, the Sheffield Wednesday manager who once worked at Southampton as Ralph Hasenhuttl’s assistant, is considered a potential replacement for Juric.

The German coach was a target for the Saints before Juric was hired at St Mary’s, while former Hull boss Liam Rosenior has also been linked to the Southampton position after a strong first season with French Ligue 1 side Strasbourg.

Southampton will face off against an in-form Aston Villa at home on Saturday.
