The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps Commandant General (NSCDC), Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has ordered the immediate detention of officers accused of extorting ₦5.2 million from a traveller, following a directive from the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
This directive was included in a statement issued by the NSCDC spokesperson, Afolabi Babawale, on Wednesday.
The case, which came to light through a viral post on social media, reportedly involved officers demanding the aforementioned amount from a young man who was travelling from Ado-Ekiti in Ekiti State to Akure, Ondo State.
Audi criticised the conduct of the officers, deeming it unprofessional and a breach of the Corps’ Code of Ethics and Standard Operating Procedure.
As per the statement, Audi ordered that the officers be taken to the NSCDC National Headquarters in Abuja for detention, while a disciplinary committee has been formed to carry out a thorough investigation into the matter.
According to the CG, any officer found guilty after the investigation would face penalties in accordance with the Public Service Rules. He emphasised that the Corps under his leadership would not accept any form of misconduct, highlighting the importance of accountability.
Audi also urged the public to keep working with the Corps by providing relevant information, reassuring citizens that they should not fear harassment or extortion.
He reiterated his dedication to integrity and transparency within the service, vowing not to protect any officer involved in corrupt actions.
