Thousands turned out in Nairobi for an opposition rally led by a rising political star on Sunday that went ahead calmly despite a surge in political violence in Kenya.
Edwin Sifuna, 44, has emerged as one of the most prominent challengers to President William Ruto ahead of a 2027 election, building support by tapping into public anger over corruption and political violence.
Critics, however, say he lacks the experience needed for the country’s top job.
His rally began with a church visit in central Nairobi, where hundreds of rowdy supporters had gathered under the watch of a heavy police presence, AFP journalists saw.
Afterwards, the Linda Mwananchi movement — an opposition group which in addition to Sifuna also involves presidential hopeful James Orengo — moved through the capital.
Crowds lined the streets as the convoys passed, with Sifuna drawing roars of approval as he pointed to his watch, a gesture suggesting Ruto’s time in office was running out.
“Kenya is saying, Honorable Ruto, your time is up. They’re saying he should serve for one term,” he told supporters.
“I’m waiting for my president to come,” said Joshua Kebwago, 32, standing by the side of the road hoping to catch a glimpse of Sifuna.
“He’s here to uplift the poor, reduce taxes and the cost of living. He can do that,” he said.
The rally ended in eastern Nairobi, as thousands poured into a large sports ground to hear speeches by leading candidates.
Previous rallies by Sifuna, who has been touring the country in recent weeks, have been disrupted by gangs of armed men, who have attacked his supporters and journalists.
Kenyan politicians across the political spectrum draft in young men to protect them and attack opponents — often leading to deadly violence.
On Saturday, Kenyan media reported that hundreds disrupted a rally for Deputy President Kithure Kindiki in Embu county, north of Nairobi, and clashed with police.
Human Rights Watch (HRW) said this week that six people had been killed and dozens more injured in attacks on civil society meetings and political gatherings in recent months.
“The spate of violence, as the pre-election period begins, threatens a return to the human rights abuses that have marred Kenya’s previous elections,” said Carine Kaneza Nantulya, HRW’s deputy Africa director, urging an end to a culture of impunity.
