Two Dispatch Riders Killed in Eko Bridge Crash

Two dispatch riders sadly lost their lives following a collision involving two fully loaded Mack lorries on Eko Bridge in Lagos on Sunday.

In a statement, the Director of the Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department at the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, revealed that initial findings suggest one of the lorry drivers—allegedly speeding and possibly dozing off—lost control of his vehicle.

The lorry reportedly veered into another moving lorry ahead, resulting in a violent impact.

This devastating crash, according to Taofiq, caused a 20-foot container to dislodge from one of the vehicles. The container tragically landed on two unsuspecting dispatch riders using the same route at the time. Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene.

Taofiq stated that LASTMA officers, who were conducting routine traffic monitoring beneath the Eko Bridge, responded swiftly and managed to rescue one lorry driver who sustained serious injuries. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital in a Lagos State Government ambulance for urgent treatment.

However, the other two lorry drivers reportedly fled the scene, likely fearing the consequences of the fatal incident.

To prevent further accidents and protect other motorists, LASTMA personnel quickly sealed off the affected portion of the bridge and redirected traffic via Coastain Roundabout towards Alaka and onward to Stadium.

In a message of condolence, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep sorrow over the loss of innocent lives. He stressed the importance of responsible driving, especially for drivers of articulated vehicles.

Bakare-Oki urged all motorists to remain fully alert, drive responsibly, and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy before embarking on any journey. He also highlighted LASTMA’s ongoing public awareness campaigns promoting road safety, particularly targeting heavy-duty vehicle operators.

LASTMA confirmed that investigations are underway to locate and apprehend the drivers who absconded.

Other emergency responders present at the scene included the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU), and officers from the Iporin Division of the Police.
