At least 20 Palestinians were killed and many more injured on Sunday night when an Israeli air strike hit a school in Gaza City that was being used to shelter displaced civilians, according to health officials in the enclave.
The strike occurred in the Daraj neighbourhood, where the school had been converted into a temporary refuge for families fleeing the ongoing conflict. Medical personnel said the bombing happened while many people were asleep, resulting in heavy casualties and widespread devastation.
In a separate series of strikes, five more Palestinians lost their lives, including a child, as Israeli forces targeted areas in Gaza City and Khan Younis, the Palestinian news agency Wafa reported.

Wafa detailed that four people were killed when warplanes attacked a residential building on Al-Thawra Street in western Gaza City. Meanwhile, in Bani Suheila, located east of Khan Younis, a drone strike hit a tent housing displaced people, killing a child and injuring four members of the same family.
Since October 7, 2023, Israel has continued its military bombardment against the Gaza Strip, which has so far claimed the lives of around 54,000 Palestinians — the majority of whom are women and children — and left approximately 123,000 injured. These numbers are expected to rise, as many victims remain trapped beneath rubble or in areas unreachable by emergency responders.
There is mounting international alarm over the increasing civilian death toll and the repeated Israeli strikes on sites housing displaced families. Global calls for an immediate ceasefire and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza have grown more urgent during the escalating humanitarian catastrophe.
