Manchester United’s miserable season took another blow on Wednesday as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Southeast Asian XI in sweltering Kuala Lumpur, watched by a crowd of 72,550.
Ruben Amorim’s side, who finished 15th in the Premier League — their worst result since 1974 — appeared sluggish and uninspired in the oppressive 32°C heat.
Some fans at Bukit Jalil National Stadium left early, and boos echoed around the ground at full-time.
In their first of two post-season friendlies in Asia, United fielded several first-team players, including Harry Maguire, Rasmus Højlund, Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Manuel Ugarte, Kobbie Mainoo, and André Onana.
Despite their strong line-up, it was the ASEAN All Stars who posed the greater threat. Filipino defender Amani Aguinaldo went close in the 16th minute, and Onana had to make a smart save soon after to keep United level.
Mainoo offered United’s first real chance with a long-range strike that was pushed out for a corner, and later had another shot cleared off the line in the 38th minute.
Bruno Fernandes came off the bench for the second half and briefly lifted the tempo, his half-volley drawing cheers from the largely pro-United crowd.
But in the 71st minute, Burmese forward Maung Maung Lwin broke clear on the counter and lashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner past Tom Heaton, stunning the Premier League side.
The home team nearly doubled their lead minutes later, but Heaton made a crucial save to avoid deeper humiliation.
United now travel to Hong Kong for their next friendly on Friday.
