The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has accused a university (Name withheld) of illegally seizing large portions of land in Giri District, Abuja. He made this revelation on Monday, June 30, while commissioning the newly constructed access road in the area.
According to Wike, the road project has played a key role in halting what he described as aggressive land encroachment by the university.
“We’re going to have most institutions like the university, like the EFCC academy and all other institutions that are supposed to be here. And this road has helped us to stop the land grabbing by the university. The university on their own grabbed 11,000 hectares. I said that will not happen. No document, nothing,” the minister stated.
Wike further criticised the manner in which portions of land were being fenced off without formal approvals.
“All you see them, fence it everywhere. And before you know it, they are going to sell our land. So I’ve told the director of lands and other land agencies to carve out 4,000 hectares and give to the university. That was relocated because we are going to provide the road share. And that is a true situation. We cannot allow people,” he said.

The minister expressed his determination to prevent unauthorised land occupation in the FCT. “You just wake up in the morning, all you see is your fence. No document, nothing. That is not the way we are supposed to work,” Wike added.
Highlighting the future potential of the district, Wike assured that the Giri area would attract investors thanks to improved infrastructure. He also signaled readiness to collaborate with lawmakers.
“So, Mr. President, this will be an important district that will attract so many investors. Of course, coming in here, you can see how beautiful it looks. If the National Assembly want to have their own institution, we are ready to partner with you to give National Assembly so that the budget can be approved as soon as possible. We are ready to do that,” Wike concluded.
