The United Nations has called for a full investigation into the death of prominent Libyan activist Abdel Monem al-Marimi, who prosecutors claim died after throwing himself down a stairwell shortly after being detained.
Marimi, a vocal critic of Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah, had been actively involved in anti-government protests and was known for his outspoken political stance. According to the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), he was reportedly taken by the Internal Security Agency in Surman, west of Tripoli, on 30 June and transferred to the Attorney General’s office on 3 July. He later died under what the UN described as “unclear circumstances”.
Local reports suggest that the activist succumbed to his injuries on Friday night at a Tripoli clinic. Libyan prosecutors stated that Marimi jumped down a stairwell inside the Attorney General’s building, after being released from an interview.

So far, the government has remained silent on the incident.
UNSMIL has demanded a “transparent and independent investigation” into the events surrounding Marimi’s death, including his detention, possible torture, and the cause of his fatal injuries.
The Attorney General’s office said it is currently reviewing security camera footage to determine the sequence of events, emphasising that Marimi had completed his questioning before the incident occurred.
The UN also condemned what it described as a broader pattern of intimidation against politically active Libyans, calling on the authorities to protect free speech and stop unlawful detentions.
