Leaders of the BRICS group of developing nations are meeting in Brazil for the summit from July 6-7. In his opening remarks at the meeting in Rio de Janeiro, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva drew a parallel with the Cold War’s Non-Aligned Movement, a group of developing nations that resisted formally joining either side of a polarised global order.
BRICS nations now represent more than half the world’s population and 40% of its economic output.
Nigeria was invited to and has joined BRICS as a “partner” country. This was formalized in January 2025, following the 16th BRICS summit in Kazan. The partner country status provides Nigeria with opportunities for deeper collaboration and engagement with BRICS nations, while not granting full membership or decision making power.
Meanwhile Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are not in attendance
Four new members which includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates were admitted in 2023.
