UN Secretary-General António Guterres has voiced grave concern over the deteriorating humanitarian conditions in Gaza, describing the situation as nearing collapse after nearly 22 months of Israeli destructions.
“The few remaining lifelines keeping people alive are now falling apart,” said UN spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric in a statement on Monday. Guterres, he added, is deeply alarmed by rising reports of both children and adults suffering from malnutrition across the territory.
On the same day, more than 20 Western nations jointly called for an immediate ceasefire, warning that the scale of suffering had reached unprecedented levels as Israeli forces pushed further into the central city of Deir el-Balah.
Guterres is particularly troubled by the escalating violence and its impact on humanitarian access. “The Secretary-General notes that the recent intensification of fighting comes as the aid system is being obstructed, weakened, and placed at risk,” Dujarric said.
He added that a new Israeli evacuation order affecting parts of Deir el-Balah—a city already sheltering tens of thousands of displaced people—has worsened conditions and severely disrupted the UN’s capacity to deliver critical assistance.
