At least three people have been injured after a regional train carrying around 100 passengers derailed in southwestern Germany on Sunday, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred shortly after 6:10pm local time (1710 GMT) near the town of Riedlingen, located in the state of Baden-Württemberg. A police spokesperson told AFP that “at least three people were injured”, though the extent of their injuries remains unclear.
Initial reports in some German media outlets had claimed fatalities, but these have not been officially confirmed.
According to Bild, a German daily newspaper, the train was travelling from the town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm when at least two carriages left the tracks in a forested area.
Dramatic images from the crash site showed yellow and grey carriages overturned and resting on their sides, as firefighters and emergency workers attempted to reach those still inside. Emergency services quickly mobilised to the scene to assist with evacuations and tend to the injured.
The cause of the derailment is still under investigation, and authorities have yet to release further details.
