Fernandez Beat Kalinskaya to Win DC Open

Canada’s Leylah Fernandez delivered a commanding performance to defeat Russia’s Anna Kalinskaya in straight sets and secure the DC Open title in Washington on Sunday.

The 22-year-old dropped just three games en route to a 6-1, 6-2 victory, capturing her first WTA 500 title and her first tournament win since 2023. The triumph marked the fourth title of her career and capped off a remarkable week in which she overcame top seed Jessica Pegula and former Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.

Fernandez made a flying start, dismantling Kalinskaya’s serve to take the first set in just half an hour. With the score at 2-1 after three routine holds, the Canadian broke through in the fourth game as Kalinskaya’s service faltered under pressure. After slipping to 15-40, the Russian double-faulted to hand Fernandez a 3-1 lead.

There was no such trouble for Fernandez on her own serve, as she comfortably held to go 4-1 up. She then pounced again on Kalinskaya’s delivery in the sixth game, earning two break points and converting the second with a blistering backhand return. A composed drop shot at the net wrapped up the set in the following game.

The second set followed a similar script, with Fernandez breaking early for a 2-1 lead before extending her advantage to 4-1. Although the next two games stayed on serve, the Canadian showed no nerves when it came time to close out the match, sealing victory on her second match point.

Fernandez’s commanding run at the DC Open underscores her resurgence ahead of the US hard-court season, with her powerful groundstrokes and consistency proving too much for her opponents throughout the week.
