Kenya is making bold moves to tackle alcohol abuse, with the National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) announcing sweeping new restrictions on where and how alcohol can be sold nationwide.

In a report released on Wednesday, July 30, NACADA banned alcohol sales in ten types of locations as part of a broader campaign to reduce access to alcohol, drugs, and other harmful substances.

The new rules prohibit selling alcohol via online platforms, home delivery services, and couriers. Petrol stations, restaurants, residential areas, toy shops, and any outlets associated with children’s products are also affected.

In a significant policy shift, the legal drinking age has been raised from 18 to 21. Individuals under 21 are now barred from entering any premises that sell alcohol — even if accompanied by an adult.

The changes signal a major transformation in Kenya’s approach to alcohol regulation, with a renewed focus on public health and youth protection.
