At least five people have been confirmed dead and dozens are feared missing following a massive flash flood in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand, India, on Tuesday, August 5. The flood, triggered by intense rainfall in the Kheer Ganga river catchment area, swept away several houses, as seen in widely circulated videos on social media.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that he has spoken with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and assured him of the central government’s full support. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed to carry out rescue operations in the affected areas.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences and pledged intensified rescue efforts.
“I express my condolences to those affected by this tragedy in Dharali, Uttarkashi. I have spoken with Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami ji to get updates on the situation,” PM Modi said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
He added that rescue and relief operations are being conducted under the state government’s supervision and emphasised that no effort is being spared to assist those impacted.
Authorities have also released emergency helpline numbers to support affected residents.
