An ex-convict has allegedly stabbed his colleague, identified simply as Dada, to death following an argument in Akute, Ifo Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Saturday and caused panic in the community, with some shop owners hurriedly shutting their businesses and fleeing the area.

The argument between the suspect, described by residents as notorious for criminal activities, and Dada escalated after the victim allegedly stabbed the suspect in the hand.

An eyewitness, identified as Gabriel, said the suspect initially left the scene but later returned with a weapon and stabbed Dada in the neck.

“They were arguing with each other. Dada was the first person to stab the suspect in the hand. Everyone here knows the suspect as very notorious. He just returned from prison.

“People who witnessed what happened immediately advised Dada to leave the area. But he didn’t listen. This time, the suspect had left the area after that cut. A few minutes later, he just returned with a weapon.

“He stabbed Dada in the neck. Bystanders applied pressure to the wounds, but he died en route to the hospital,” the eyewitness said.

Another eyewitness, Samuel, said some residents took Dada to a hospital but later abandoned his body by the roadside after discovering that he had died.

“Some people rushed him to the hospital. But when they discovered he had died, they left the corpse on the road before calling the police to inform them about what had happened,” he said.

A police source, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to comment, described the suspect as notorious in the area.

The source said the incident occurred under the Akute bridge, which hoodlums involved in various criminal activities allegedly use as a hideout.

“There are reports of phone theft and all manner of crimes in the area. If you pass that place at night, it is a problem. That is why our men are usually stationed there at night. We are still looking for the suspect,” the source said.

The Ogun State Police Command confirmed the incident and said efforts were underway to apprehend the fleeing suspect.

The Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, Opeyemi Oluborode, said the command had intensified efforts to track down the suspect.

“The command is very much aware of the case. And has seriously intensified efforts to track down and apprehend the fleeing suspect,” he said.

The incident is the second reported fatal stabbing in the area this year.

In February, a commercial motorcyclist was reportedly stabbed to death by a member of a transport union tax collection group, popularly known as agberos, following an argument over a N100 ticket.

The incident triggered protests by commercial motorcyclists in Lambe, Agbado and Akute communities.
