Senegal Beats Nigeria to Open CHAN Defence

Senegal defeated Nigeria 1-0 in their opening group match at Amaan stadium in Zanzibar on Tuesday, making a solid start to their title defence in the African Nations Championships (CHAN).

The two teams were closely matched for most of the match until Senegal, facing their West African rivals for the first time in the tournament, managed to break through in the 75th minute. Midfielder Serigne Koite seized a loose ball at the edge of the area, drew the Nigerian goalkeeper out, and set up Christian Gomis, who easily tapped in the decisive goal for Senegal.

Senegal’s next opponents, Congo, came from behind to hold Sudan to a 1-1 draw in a tightly contested match.

The Sudanese Falcons seemed poised to take all three points after wonderkid Musa Ali Hussein had given them an early advantage in the 29th minute. The Al Merrikh striker skillfully navigated past two Congolese defenders before unleashing a right-footed shot from the left side of the penalty area to provide his team with a well-deserved lead.

However, a defensive error in the last five minutes allowed the underdogs, Congo, to equalise.

Substitute Carly Ekongo salvaged a point for his country in the 86th minute when he took advantage of a loose ball in the penalty area to hammer home the equaliser.
