Major League Soccer side, LAFC, celebrated the addition of a “global icon” on Wednesday after officially announcing the signing of South Korea’s Son Heung-min from Tottenham.

The 33-year-old reportedly cost $26 million, setting a record for Major League Soccer, according to ESPN and The Athletic, following a decade spent in the Premier League, where he gained widespread recognition.

An emotional Son revealed on Saturday in South Korea that he would be departing Spurs, just a few months after he helped the club end its 17-year wait for a trophy by winning the Europa League as captain.

“We are proud that he has chosen Los Angeles for the next chapter of his extraordinary career.

He exits as Tottenham’s fifth all-time leading scorer, having netted 173 goals in 454 matches.

Son is expected to be introduced at a press conference in Los Angeles at 2 pm local time (2100 GMT).

His arrival attracted crowds on Tuesday at Los Angeles International Airport, with fans displaying South Korean flags and messages of encouragement.

“Sonny is one of the greatest players to ever wear the famous Lilywhite shirt and he has been a joy to watch over the past decade,” said Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy.

Son will take the place of French striker Olivier Giroud, who moved to Lille in July, and will join French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, his former teammate at Tottenham, in the dressing room.
