The Portuguese Navy has increased patrols along the country’s southern coast following the rare arrival of a migrant boat from North Africa.
The wooden vessel, carrying 38 people, landed Friday evening near the town of Vila do Bispo in the Algarve.
According to a statement from the GNR police, the migrants were found in a “debilitated state,” suffering from dehydration and hypothermia.
Ten people were taken to the hospital for medical care. Officials confirmed that seven minors and six women were among the passengers, though their nationalities and the boat’s exact departure point were not disclosed.
Public broadcaster RTP reported that the vessel originated from Morocco and had spent six days at sea.
Migrant boats from North Africa typically head to other parts of southern Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, making Portugal an uncommon destination.
In response to the arrival, the Portuguese Navy has “immediately” stepped up surveillance along the Algarve coast and is urging residents to report any suspicious vessels.
