Nigerian international striker Victor Boniface has completed a season-long loan move to Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen, the two clubs confirmed on Monday.

Bremen head coach Horst Steffen expressed confidence in the 24-year-old, stating that Boniface could play a “very important” role for the team this season. The transfer came on the final day of the window, following several previous moves that fell through.

Earlier in the year, Boniface was the subject of a reported €70 million ($81 million) offer from Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr, but the deal collapsed when the club opted to sign Jhon Duran from Aston Villa instead. In August, a proposed transfer to AC Milan also failed, reportedly due to the striker not passing a medical, despite an agreement being reached with Leverkusen.

Boniface was instrumental in Leverkusen’s unbeaten league and cup double during the 2023-24 season, scoring 14 goals and providing nine assists in 23 Bundesliga appearances. His departure adds to a spate of exits from the club this summer, including key players Florian Wirtz, Granit Xhaka, Jonathan Tah, Jeremie Frimpong, and coach Xabi Alonso.
