Joe Bugner, the former British heavyweight who famously went the distance with Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier in the 1970s, has died at the age of 75.

Born in Hungary, Bugner faced Ali and Frazier in 1973, later challenging Ali again for a world title in Kuala Lumpur in 1975, losing each bout on points. Over a career spanning 32 years, he also fought notable opponents including American puncher Earnie Shavers and fellow Britons Henry Cooper and Frank Bruno.

Bugner, who moved to Britain as a child refugee following the 1956 Soviet invasion of Hungary, claimed 69 wins from 83 fights, alongside 13 defeats and one draw. He held the British and Commonwealth heavyweight titles twice and was a three-time European champion.

After retiring in 1987 following a loss to Bruno, financial pressures prompted a comeback eight years later, during which he won the Australian heavyweight title and, at 48, captured the World Boxing Federation crown. In later life, Bugner relocated to Australia and spent his final years in a care home after a diagnosis of dementia.

He also dabbled in the entertainment industry, appearing in films and featuring on the British TV show I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! in 2009. The British Boxing Board of Control expressed condolences, praising him as a former British, European, and Commonwealth champion and world title contender. Promoter Frank Warren remembered him as a fighter who went the distance with both Ali and Frazier.
