Former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair may assume a prominent position in a transitional authority for Gaza as part of US-led peace initiatives, various British media outlets reported on Friday.

This comes after Blair engaged in talks with the administration of US President Donald Trump and others concerning the governance structure for the Palestinian region following the conflict.

According to reports, the proposal could see Blair at the helm of the authority, with backing from the UN and Gulf states.

The Financial Times indicated that the former UK leader, who served as a Middle East peace mediator from 2007 to 2015, had expressed interest in joining its supervisory board.

Last week, Israeli media coverage of his involvement in the US-led peace initiative led to sources close to Blair confirming his collaboration with other parties to find a resolution to the conflict.

However, they emphasised that he would oppose any plans to relocate Gazans permanently and insisted that any transitional governing authority for the area would ultimately return power to the Palestinian Authority based in Ramallah in the West Bank.

It is being reported that an entity referred to as the “Gaza International Transitional Authority” would seek a UN mandate to function as the “supreme political and legal authority” for five years before transferring control back to the Palestinians.
