Los Angeles FC (LAFC) secured their fourth consecutive Major League Soccer (MLS) victory on Saturday, defeating St. Louis City 3-0, fuelled by two goals from Son Heung-min and one from Denis Bouanga.
Bouanga’s 23rd goal of the season puts him just one behind Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi for the MLS scoring lead.
The Gabon international scored his fifth goal in five straight games by seizing a St. Louis error and firing from outside the box in the 15th minute.
Son, the former Tottenham captain, added his eighth and ninth goals in eight MLS games, scoring in first-half stoppage time and again in the 60th minute. The duo has now combined for 17 consecutive goals for LAFC in a single season, strengthening the team’s playoff position.
Messi Held to Draw
Meanwhile, Lionel Messi was held scoreless as Inter Miami drew 1-1 with Toronto. Miami took the lead just before halftime with a header from Tadeo Allende.
However, Miami’s defence conceded an equaliser in the 60th minute to Djordje Mihailovic.
Despite multiple attempts, including shots denied by a superb performance from Toronto goalkeeper Sean Johnson, Messi could not find the net.
The draw leaves Miami level on points with New York City FC in the Eastern Conference, four points behind leaders Philadelphia.
Other results saw New York City FC defeat the New York Red Bulls 3-2, while Nashville and Columbus also secured playoff berths.
