Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has said that a secondary school certificate is all a politician needs to contest elections or qualify for a political appointment in Nigeria.
Sani remarked on Monday in response to an investigative report revealing that the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), had disowned the Bachelor of Science certificate presented by the Minister of Science, Technology, and Innovation, Uche Nnaji.
The institution stated that Nnaji did not complete his studies and was never issued a degree certificate.
According to court documents filed before Justice Hauwa Yilwa of the Federal High Court in Abuja, Nnaji admitted that UNN did not issue him a degree certificate.
The minister has sued the Minister of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), UNN, its Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Ortuanya, the Registrar, a former Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Oguejiofor Ujam, and the university’s Senate.
The court granted three of Nnaji’s requests, including an order directing the university and its officials to release his academic transcript.
However, it declined to grant an injunction against the defendants. The case was adjourned to October 6 for further hearing.
Reacting via his X handle, Sani warned political aspirants against falsifying their academic qualifications.
“All you need to contest elections or secure a political appointment is a secondary school certificate,” he wrote.
“In politics, it is impossible to claim qualifications you did not earn without your opponents uncovering the truth. Some problems are simply self-inflicted.”
