President Bola Tinubu has conferred the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) on Mahmood Yakubu, the outgoing Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the completion of his second term in office.

The announcement was made in a statement on Tuesday by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

According to Onanuga, the honour recognises Yakubu’s significant contributions to the country, particularly his role in strengthening democracy and conducting credible elections during his two terms.

“President Tinubu appreciates Professor Yakubu’s service to the nation and his commitment to sustaining Nigeria’s democracy, especially through the organisation of free and fair elections throughout his tenure,” the statement read.

Tinubu also directed Yakubu to hand over leadership of the commission to May Agbamuche-Mbu, the most senior national commissioner, who will oversee INEC’s affairs until a new chairman is appointed.

Yakubu was first appointed in November 2015 as the 14th chairman of INEC for a five-year term and was reappointed in 2020 for a second term.
