Spanish football star Jordi Alba has announced that he will retire at the end of the current Major League Soccer (MLS) season, bringing an illustrious career to a close.
The Inter Miami defender, who earned 93 caps for Spain between 2011 and 2023, confirmed his decision in an emotional post on Instagram on Tuesday.
“The moment has come to close a truly meaningful chapter in my life,” Alba wrote. “I’ve decided to bring my professional football career to an end at the conclusion of this season. I feel I’ve walked this path with every ounce of passion I had, and now it’s the right time to open a new chapter and close the previous one with the best possible feeling. Today I close this chapter knowing I’ve given it my all—football has been and always will be an essential part of my life. Thanks, football, for everything.”
Alba, renowned for his pace, precision, and attacking prowess from the left flank, joined Inter Miami in 2023, reuniting with his former Barcelona teammates Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets. Though initially expected to play through to 2027, the 35-year-old defender has chosen to hang up his boots earlier than planned.
His glittering career includes six La Liga titles and a UEFA Champions League triumph with Barcelona, where he became a cornerstone of one of the most successful teams in football history.
On the international stage, Alba was instrumental in Spain’s Euro 2012 victory, scoring in the final against Italy as part of the country’s golden generation.
With his departure, Inter Miami will lose not only a world-class defender but also one of football’s most consistent performers of the past decade.
