The United Nations agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) has welcomed the recent ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas and confirmed it has sufficient food stocks to support the entire population of Gaza for the next three months.
UNRWA chief Philippe Lazzarini described the ceasefire as “a huge relief” on X, noting that it follows a 20-point peace plan for Gaza unveiled last month by US President Donald Trump.
The plan calls for Israel to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for hostages.
Lazzarini said the deal would provide much-needed respite for people who have endured two years of bombardment, displacement, and loss.
“After their excruciating ordeal, hostages and Palestinian detainees will finally join their families,” he added.
Highlighting the agency’s preparedness, Lazzarini confirmed that UNRWA has “food, medicines + other basic supplies ready to go to Gaza,” where famine has been spreading. “We have enough to provide food for the entire population for the coming three months,” he said.
UNRWA has often faced criticism from Israel, which accuses the agency of harbouring Hamas operatives and barred it from operating in Israeli territory earlier this year.
Nevertheless, the agency maintains a workforce of around 12,000 staff inside Gaza, whom Lazzarini described as “crucial for the implementation of this agreement, including to provide basic services like healthcare and education.”
The UNRWA chief stressed the importance of returning children to school, noting that “over 660,000 children are eagerly waiting to go back to school,” with agency teachers ready to assist.
Lazzarini concluded by calling on all member states to support UNRWA in delivering essential aid during the coming critical period.
