Former Liverpool midfielder Steven Gerrard has ruled himself out of returning for a second spell as manager of Rangers, according to reports on Saturday.
The 45-year-old had been considered the leading candidate to replace Russell Martin, who was sacked last weekend after just four months in charge, following a poor start in which Rangers won only one of their first seven Scottish Premiership matches.
Sources indicate that Gerrard, after holding constructive discussions with the club, felt the timing was not right for a return to Ibrox.
Gerrard previously managed Rangers between 2018 and 2021, guiding the club to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season before departing to take charge at Aston Villa.
He left his role at Saudi Arabian side Al-Ettifaq in January.
Other potential candidates for the Rangers job include Hearts manager Derek McInnes, former Rangers player Kevin Muscat, and ex-Everton boss Sean Dyche.
