The Lagos State Government has distanced itself from the recent demolition of structures in FESTAC Town, clarifying that the operation was not sanctioned by the state.

This was contained in a statement titled “Lagos Government Denies Involvement in FESTAC Demolition,” issued on Tuesday by Mukaila Sanusi, Director of Public Affairs, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluyinka Olumide, emphasised that the state government had no role in the exercise, contrary to public speculation.

He explained that Lagos operates under a transparent and well-defined framework for demolitions, which includes issuing statutory notices and engaging affected stakeholders. Any demolition carried out without official authorisation, he said, does not represent the stance or procedure of the present administration.

Olumide assured residents that the government remains committed to fairness, due process, and the protection of property rights. He also urged federal agencies and other bodies operating in Lagos to seek proper clearance from the ministry before carrying out any demolition activities.

The clarification follows the recent demolition of more than 15 buildings along 6th Avenue, FESTAC Town, over the weekend, which left several traders and shop owners distressed as bulldozers moved from one structure to another.
