A global service failure at Amazon Web Services (AWS), originating in the critical US-East-1 region (Northern Virginia), crippled major internet services worldwide for several hours on Monday.

The outage, which Amazon’s engineers largely mitigated over three hours, initially caused “increased error rates” for multiple AWS services, including DynamoDB API endpoints.

The domino effect of the disruption showcased the world’s dependence on the Amazon cloud platform, affecting a vast array of high-profile consumer applications and platforms.

Services impacted included Amazon’s own products like Amazon Prime, Alexa, and Prime Video, alongside popular third-party apps such as Snapchat, Fortnite, Reddit, Duolingo, Hulu, Disney+, Signal, and Perplexity.

The disruption also reached financial and travel services, hitting UK banks and Delta Air Lines.

Analysts noted that the incident underscores the significant economic risk of concentrating global digital infrastructure among a few major providers like Amazon, Microsoft, and Alphabet.
