Hamas has praised a decision by a Turkish court to issue arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and 36 other Israeli officials, accusing them of genocide and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip.

The ruling was announced on Friday by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, according to Anadolu.

Among those named in the warrants are Defence Minister Israel Katz, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, and the Commander of the Israeli Naval Forces, David Saar Salama.

In a statement, Hamas said the Turkish move demonstrated the steadfast commitment of the Turkish government and people to justice and humanity, as well as their solidarity with Palestinians who have endured what the group described as one of the most severe genocidal campaigns in recent times.

Hamas urged governments and judicial institutions around the world to take similar measures to pursue Israeli officials globally and ensure they face accountability for alleged crimes against humanity.

In November 2024, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants against Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel’s offensive in the enclave has resulted in nearly 69,000 deaths, the majority of them women and children, and left more than 170,000 others wounded since October 2023.

The assault was paused under a ceasefire agreement that came into force on October 10.
