Taylor Fritz kicked off his quest for a first ATP Finals title in perfect fashion, securing a decisive 6-3, 6-4 victory against local favourite Lorenzo Musetti in the Jimmy Connors group in Turin on Monday.
The 28-year-old American, who was the runner-up to Jannik Sinner in last year’s finals, started strong, gaining an early break and maintaining it to take the first set.
The crowd rallied to support a visibly exhausted Musetti, who was added to the lineup at the last minute. He qualified for the Finals just on Saturday after Novak Djokovic withdrew due to injury, shortly after defeating the Italian in the Athens event final.

Fritz dominated the match, winning 84 per cent of his first serve points and allowing only four break point opportunities, none of which Musetti converted. The American broke serve to go ahead 3-1 and maintained his composure while serving to seal the match.
Fritz now shares the top position in the group with Carlos Alcaraz, who defeated Alex de Minaur on Sunday.
Later on Monday, Sinner will compete against Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in the Bjorn Borg group.
