Liverpool attacking midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai scored a dramatic last-minute penalty to rescue a 2-2 draw for the team against Newcastle in Andoni Iraola’s managerial debut.
Iraola, who replaced Arne Slot following a fifth-place finish last season, saw his side struggle defensively in their first match since Mohamed Salah’s summer exit.
Newcastle struck early in the fifth minute when Anthony Elanga outpaced the Liverpool defence to convert William Osula’s pass.
Liverpool levelled early in the second half through Cody Gakpo’s low 25-yard strike, but Joe Willock quickly restored Newcastle’s lead by beating Jeremie Frimpong just two minutes later.

Liverpool clinched a point in stoppage time after Newcastle defender Lewis Hall tripped debutant Victor Munoz in the box.
Szoboszlai slammed the resulting penalty into the top corner with the final kick of the match, sparing the Reds from an opening-day defeat at St James’ Park.
