Atletico Madrid fought back to secure a dramatic 2-2 draw against Villarreal on Sunday, playing the final minutes with 10 men after refereeing decisions reduced their squad.

Marc Pubill opened the scoring for Atletico in the 59th minute with a curling strike into the top corner, but Gerard Moreno quickly equalised for Villarreal from the penalty spot following Morten Hjulmand’s clumsy foul.

Hostility filled the Metropolitano Stadium as coach Diego Simeone brought on Julián Álvarez, whom home supporters loudly booed due to his summer transfer requests.

Villarreal capitalised on the tension when Robin Le Normand shoved Georges Mikautadze in the box, earning a red card via VAR review.

Mikautadze converted the resulting penalty to give Villarreal a 2-1 lead with 12 minutes remaining.

Despite the numerical disadvantage, Atletico responded rapidly through Giuliano Simeone, who latched onto Alex Baena’s pass and finished past the goalkeeper to tie the match five minutes before full-time.

Goalkeeper Jan Oblak preserved the point with a crucial late save against Tajon Buchanan, while Alvarez departed straight down the tunnel at the final whistle.
