After more than two years away from competitive action, 2018 World Cup winner Paul Pogba is slated to make his debut for AS Monaco this Saturday in a Ligue 1 clash against Rennes.

The 32-year-old midfielder has faced a turbulent period, which included numerous injuries, a four-year doping ban that was later reduced to 18 months, and a complex extortion case.

This challenging chapter culminated in Juventus terminating his contract last November.

Upon his suspension ending in March, Monaco took a calculated risk by signing the extravagantly talented midfielder, making this his first professional club stint in his native France.

While initial plans to integrate him were delayed by minor knocks this autumn, Pogba is now reportedly ready.

Manager Sebastien Pocognoli is expected to ease him back gently, likely bringing him on in the final moments of the match at Roazhon Park.

Pogba’s return is highly scrutinised, with all eyes on whether his unique ability to execute difficult, creative passes remains intact after 26 months on the sidelines.

The comeback holds significant weight for his personal career ambitions, as he has stated his dream is to perform well enough to rejoin the French national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

His presence is also expected to be a boon for young Monaco talents like Maghnes Akliouche, the 23-year-old attacker who could greatly benefit from Pogba’s elite-level service in the midfield.
