The United Nations (UN) warned Tuesday that dramatic international funding cuts, particularly from major donors like the United States, have plunged the global HIV response into “turmoil.”
The UNAIDS agency stated that the abrupt cessation of funds has severely disrupted the entire system for HIV treatment and prevention across dozens of countries, calling it the “most significant setback in decades.”
Executive director Winnie Byanyima noted that the cuts have led to clinic closures, job losses for health workers, and widespread interruption of essential services.

Although AIDS-related deaths and infections have declined significantly since 2010, the current crisis exposes the fragility of this progress.
UNAIDS specifically warned that the collapse of prevention services, coupled with a deteriorating human rights environment in many countries, risks generating 3.3 million additional new HIV infections by 2030 if the deep financial crisis is not immediately addressed.
