Tunisian President Kais Saied summoned the European Union’s ambassador, Giuseppe Perrone, on Wednesday to issue a formal protest against what he described as a “failure to respect diplomatic rules” and the use of “practices outside of official frameworks.”
The presidency provided no specific details regarding the alleged breach in protocol.
The incident comes shortly after Ambassador Perrone met with Noureddine Taboubi, the influential leader of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT).

The UGTT is a historically powerful body that remains an effective domestic counterweight to President Saied, who has imprisoned many critics since his 2021 power grab.
Perrone had praised the union’s role, while Taboubi recently backed ongoing strikes and threatened a national work stoppage in response to high inflation and the erosion of workers’ purchasing power.
